RKMVU - RKMVERI: Alteration of name of the Institution ‘Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute’

Note on the Sponsoring Society and the name of the Institution ‘Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute’ (Deemed-to-be-University as declared by the Government of India under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956)

The name of the sponsoring society is Ramakrishna Mission (with headquarters at Belur Math in the district of Howrah in West Bengal), which is a well-known registered society registered under Registration of Societies Act XXI of 1860.
Under the aegis of and with the same registration as Ramakrishna Mission [vide UGC letter D.O.No.F.6-41/2001 (CPP-I) dated 3 January 2002, read with subsequent UGC Notification No.F.6-1 (II)/2006 (CPP-I) dated 13 September 2006], a higher education institution for education and research with a view to actualizing Swami Vivekananda’s educational vision was established and declared by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, as an institution Deemed-to-be-University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 (vide Gazetted Notification by MHRD Ref.No.F.9-54/2004-U.3 dated 5 January 2005 read with the subsequent Notification by MHRD Ref.No.F.9-14/2006-U.3(A) dated 20 February 2006 approving three ‘Off-Campus’ Centres). This institution’s name as in the UGC’s original Notification is: Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RMVERI). This was later renamed as Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University (Declared as deemed-to-be-University under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956) as permitted by in its Notification No.F.6-1 (II)/2006 (CPP-I) dated 13 September 2006 read with Corrigendum No.F.6-1 (II)/2006 (CPP-I) dated 20 February 2008].
Subsequently, by a Notification No.F.6-1 (II)/2006 (CPP-I) dated 19 August 2009, UGC decided to withdraw, on a directive from MHRD, the above mentioned Notification dated 13 September 2006 together with the  Corrigendum dated 20 February 2008, which, together with directive in the New Regulations governing institutions deemed to be universities issued by UGC by Gazetted Notification No.F.6-1 (II)/2006 (CPP-I) dated 21 May 2010, subsequently amended three times, and ultimately replaced by modified Regulations (superseding all the earlier Regulations), notified by UGC through a Gazetted Notification on 11 July 2016, as well as a subsequent UGC directive, Ref.No.F.5-1/2017 (CPP-I/DU) dated 10 November 2017 quoting therein the verdict of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India dated 3 November 2017 directing the UGC to restrain the institutions deemed-to-be-Universities from using the word ‘University’ in their names, the original name of the Institution deemed-to-be-University, namely, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RMVERI), is back to use, having come a full circle, with the words “Deemed-to-be-University as declared by the Government of India under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956” within parenthesis suffixed thereto.

Thus, the present name of our Institution deemed-to-be-University is the following:

Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI)
(Deemed-to-be-University as declared by Ministry of HRD, Government of India under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956)
