About The Faculty Centre
The Faculty Centre at Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Narendrapur, Kolkata,for the Faculty of ‘Integrated Rural Development and Management (IRDM)’ is an ‘off-campus’ centre of the University, approved by UGC and MHRD. Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama (RKM), Narendrapur, Kolkata 700103 is a branch-centre of Ramakrishna Mission with headquarters at Belur Math, Howrah, West Bengal. This centre houses a huge educational complex in a sprawling campus of about 250 acres, with a string of institutions such as a residential college, a residential school, blind boys’ academy, automobile training Centre, commercial institute, two units meant for integrated rural development, namely, Lokasiksha Parishad and agricultural training centre. There are huge agricultural farms and extension services covering nearly a thousand villages for integrated rural development. A large and well-maintained medicinal plant garden is a unique feature of the centre. The greenery and well-maintained gardens, ponds and water bodies, farms, play grounds etc together with the overall serene atmosphere give the campus an elevating ambience ideally suited for cultivation of knowledge - the aim of any educational institution.
The new Faculty is meant to provide quality education for a meaningful and self-supporting life to youths and train them to cater to the needs of economically poor and socially underprivileged sections of the society. One unique feature of the courses under this Faculty, which is a common feature of all the courses under the University, is to provide value-based and higher goal-oriented education.
Infrastructural and Other Facilities

Rice Cultivation, IRDM, RKMVU, Narendrapur
The existing rural development unit of the Ashrama consists of about 25,000 sq. ft. concrete area and more than 15 hectares of farm land. Among the total concrete area, about 80 percent is used for academic purposes like class rooms, laboratories, libraries, seminar/meeting rooms, conference halls etc. All these rooms are well equipped with advanced academic aids necessary for teaching. The rural development unit can boast of well qualified, experienced, practical-field-oriented faculty members, well informed in the latest state-of-art, and who are continuously updating their knowledge in every aspect of rural development. In fact, this band of dedicated and qualified faculty is one of the main assets of the University. The highly experienced renowned personnel includes a former Vice Chancellor of an agricultural University, a former Director of National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD), Programme Co-ordinators of PG courses on rural development of national institutes, top managerial personnel of private agri-input sectors etc, advice the University in the Faculty Centre. A new five-storey building of more than 6000 sq. ft. floor area is under construction within the campus.
Infrastructure available:
- The class rooms are equipped with computers with internet access. Most of the sessions are conducted through multimedia presentations
- Students use the bio-technology laboratory on their own, guided by experts in various fields like practice of tissue culture, biofertilizer preparation, microbial culture preparation etc.
- The soil testing laboratory is equipped with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer.
- Mushroom culture and its 'spawn' preparation laboratory.
- Facilities for bio-pesticide prepartion and culture of friendly bio-control agents.
Library Facilities
There is a General Library containing nearly 59,997 books at the end of the year 2000-20001. It has a wing named Text-Book Library from which books are lent to students on a long-term basis. In addition to it, each Honours department of the college has a Seminar Library consisting of text and reference books. 49 journals are subscribed to by the College Library and Honours Departments.
In addition to the College Library and the Seminar Libraries, there is a big Central Library on the Ashrama campus which supplements the facilities enjoyed by the teachers and students through their sectional libraries.
